Tuesdays w/TJae:
Early Voting in Texas

Happy Tuesday Reader!

Early Voting for the November 4th Election in Texas is happening now through October 31st. Even if you don't live in Texas, this brief post shares a few HUMAN-aligned questions I used to evaluate the Constitutional Amendment Propositions. Maybe they'll help you think through your next voting decisions too.

A More HUMAN–Aligned Voting Lens
HUMAN Element Reflection Question

Honesty - Does this amendment name and address a real issue clearly, or does it obscure who benefits and who bears the cost?

Urgency - Does this create needed change now, or push action without accountability or clarity?

Meaningfulness - Does it move Texas toward long-term equity, justice, and community well-being? Or is it symbolic or performative?

Accountability - Who will hold power under this amendment, and how transparent and accountable would that power be?

Nuance - Does it consider complexity, or does it overly favor one group under a broad justification like “tax relief” or “education” without deeper scrutiny?

Actively HUMAN + Voting Review

After reviewing the pros and cons of each proposition on vote411.org, I was still undecided about a few of them. That's when I turned toActively HUMAN to generate questions that helped me think through my options more clearly. See my final proposition recommendations and rationale here.

Here’s to showing up - on ballots and in conversations - with the kind of honesty and nuance our future deserves. May we keep building a democracy that feels more like us.

LOVE first. Always.

In case you're new to Tuesdays w/ TJae, you should know that you won't receive emails from me every Tuesday, or on any particular Tuesday - but always (well, normally) on a Tuesday. As a child, whenever we'd visit my Grandpa James, he'd end the visit by saying "See you Tuesday," no matter when we were scheduled to see him again. So this newsletter is part nod to James Rivers, and part nod to my love of alliteration.

See you Tuesday!

Two words: Grand Rising. Now, I have feelings about “Grand Rising.” Strong ones. Feelings I have never once communicated to the person who sent it. And by all accounts, they were simply trying to greet me warmly on a Tuesday morning. Did that matter in the moment? It did not. I hit thumbs down and kept it moving. And...

But this is what community does. We pay attention to the moments everyone else is reacting to, and we slow them down. Sunday evening, as Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo stood on stage at the 79th ceremony hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), the N-word was shouted...

Today is Mardi Gras.It is also the first day of Ramadan. It is the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Fire Horse. And this morning we learned of the passing of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., at 84 years old. I grew up repeating, “I AM somebody.” In 1984, I was in a middle school classroom - Social studies, I think. Maybe language arts. I cannot remember the subject,...
